Hello, My Angry Ocean

Two weekends in a row, the ocean churned.  I compared pictures and could have taken them all on the same day.  Only for this one, I'm standing at a beach, with towering piles of dirty snow melting behind me, imagining striped umbrellas, lifeguards swinging their whistles, and the flurry of kids gripping bills while they run to the parking lot as the ice cream truck pulls up.  Somewhere a radio chirps.  Teenage boys paddle a ball back and forth across the hard-packed sand.  Women wearing oxford cloth shirts over their bathing suits walk with eyes cast down and squat to pick up sea glass.  In this vignette, the sun is hot on my shoulders.  I'm sitting in the same striped beach chair I've used for thirty years.  There's a novel in my lap, but it's closed as I watch a wave chase a flock of terns and they skitter-step up from from the edge.

It's forty degrees and raining here right now.  We are almost there. Right?  Right?

  2. My ocean is frozen still. I await the day when it thaws out but it won't be for at least a month. Living on an inland sea (or a deep reaching fjord, a long inlet) as I do, in the subarctic, means a very still ocean for six months of the year. When break-up happens we have a dance in our town, called the Ice to Water Dance. How fun is that! Back when North West River was even smaller and before there was a road or a place for the road to go, breakup meant that the supply boat could get in - kids would run to the Hudson's Bay wharf to get a cup of flour before they were even off-loaded.

  5. The ice is finally gone from the river here but there's still a fair amount of snow lingering. I'm hoping that my two weeks away will be enough to let spring take hold and maybe there will be some green waiting for me when I get back.

  6. What a beautiful picture!

There has never been a time that spring didn't come. Mother Nature just does not want us to take anything for granted and seems to testing us with delayed gratification. We will all rejoice more this year.

  7. gorgeous pic. There truly is hope. I offered to pick you up at the airport. (grin). You'll be comfy on the beach in August and I'll be swooning in the heat. It's only fair. Your turn is coming...soon. Take care

  9. Beautiful colors in the photo. Another cool and gloomy day here like someone forgot to pay the power bill for the sun.

  10. Lovely fantasy. I would just add a scantily-clad beach boy bringing a Margarita my way. ;)

  11. In a way I miss the four seasons, but I do remember how the heat and humidity of summer always seemed so remote and downright impossible during the dead of winter. Well, and vice versa.

Someone once told me that we do have four seasons here in Florida: 1. Almost summer, 2. Summer, 3. Still summer, and 4. Christmas. Ha!

  13. Such brilliant ocean blues! It finally warmed up here today, and then it dropped to 48 degrees by 5:00. I hope the warm weather finds its way to you soon, so you can head right to your beach chair. Beautifully written, Liza!

I love that picture. (I'm a displaced Bostonian living in landlocked Ohio. Oh, how I miss the ocean.)

  17. I live in the south and I can't even tell that spring is coming. The weather is so out of whack. I am a new follower. I stopped by because Alex honored you on his blog today and I knew I would not be disappointed. Glad to be here.
