Keep in mind though, that if you skip it due to overcast skies, you’ll miss the pinprick beacon as the steadfast lighthouse blinks over the shoulder of an ice-covered lobster boat.
You will fail to record the wall of snow-brushed granite stooping--a heaving monster bearing down on an vacant boat chandlery.
The Christmas tree on the common, still lit at will flicker unnoticed, as will the way the moss-covered stones in the cemetery overlooking the water appear to have marched in from the sea.
Yellowing rock walls guarding the slushy landscape of the inner harbor will stand alone and fifty yards down an empty road, the high-tide-flooded marshes, bled of all color will ripple unseen.
By all means, sleep in. Just recognize that when you do, these images will merge into moments passed—the blended splendor of one frozen morning, never captured—or shared.
Happy Friday all. How is winter taking shape in your part of the world?

Liza, great pics! Where are you in MA? I grew up in Falmouth, and this sure looks a lot like home!
It's so lovely, Liza! I didn't feel cold once, looking at those pictures. :)
the photos appear so coooollldddd but emit a radiance that warms to a natural balance. Such a beautiful place. thnx
I miss the snow on the water. Frozen lobster boats too.
Beautiful shots! Beautiful poetic captions! And a seriously large gold star for getting up at the crack of dawn, cold or not.
Those are some of the most beautiful photos I've seen all season! LOVE them! We have nothing but cold-ish weather here. And lots of birds at the feeders to take pictures of!
Beautiful pictures! It's dreary and overcast here, trying to get up to 40. However I'm glad not to live in a place where it's snowy and wintery and cold for so many months out of the year. You can take the tropicbird out of the tropics, but you can't take the tropics out of the tropicbird.
Those shots were worth getting up and going out in the cold for!! Great pics.
Lovely. I can feel the cold, the wonder, the stillness.
I love those days I wake up at dawn and see the pale light emerge.
wonderful pictures and a wonderful reminder to seize the day - especially that early day.
Great photos! Aren't you glad you got up anyway?
Lovely photos, beautiful words. Thank you.
January in California is just gray. GRAY GRAY GRAY. But look now...you've made me think I should take a second look!
Wonderful pics, Liza. They are extraordinary. Wonderful thoughts. And you give us a wonderful reminder not to waste any moments. Thanks girlfriend. :)
And I just realized I used the word wonderful three times. Wonderful.
your last shot is glorious
I love winter still shots. I jist don't like to wake up at the crack of dawn in sub-freezing weather to take the pics. Thanks for doing the hard work for us so we can enjoy them from the comforts of our warm houses while drinking a cup of coffee.
Don't sleep in - then we would miss your pictures! My fav is the last one.
Glad you got up early enough to catch these! They are SO beautiful. I love all of them. They soothe my spirit. Thank you!!
I'm usually on the road at sunrise and traffic doesn't allow for pictures. Sadly, I've missed recording the beauty of the morning.
