Out with the Wind

I take a lot of pictures of the ocean.  On windy days, I’ll head down to watch with awe as the sea explodes upon the rocks and geysers over out lighthouse. I love watching the still waters of the harbor when the wind kicks up a heavy churn.  There is such magnificence about it and a comfort of watching the drama, as it happens far away.

At home though, in our house at the bottom of an incline, surrounded by towering pines and massive oaks, I’m less inclined to love wind and more disposed to worry.

The day we moved in almost 21 years ago,  I looked out one of the picture windows to the grove of hundred foot pines out back and announced, “I don’t ever want to do a hurricane in this house.”

In the last year plus, we’ve dealt with two hurricanes. Both times, the weather folks had a field day, and I bought into their drama.  I purchased water, batteries and canned food we’d never touch otherwise. I wrung my hands when my husband drove 66 miles toward the storm the morning of Sandy to get to work, and I looked up at those darn pine trees and I prayed.  After both storms, we gazed at our intact trees and smirked, “That was a hurricane?”

The bad news is there wasn't much warning for what happened in our yard Wednesday night.  The weather man said it would be windy.  Well, he got that right.

The good news is no one was hurt and nothing happened to our house.  In the future, I’ll continue to respect the wind. Now though, I have a healthy appreciation for homeowners insurance.

Is that your shed? I'm sorry!! Strong wind to take over pine tress. They tend to hold up better than oaks and leafy trees due to their deep tap root.
That first photo is powerful.

Yep, Alex, that was our shed. It was a massive oak that started a chain reaction and took down four pines. The tree man is here today, taking down more!

It looks like the trees targeted the shed.

I'm glad you told us that nobody was hurt, because this looks pretty devastating.

Thank goodness it was the shed and not your house! Wind can be really scary and so strange. We once had a 1 ton tree go right over the top of our old car and land on our brand new one in a wind storm. And my neighbors wonder why I always park in the garage, every time. What I would have done to have a garage back when our car was destroyed!

That pic of the lighthouse is gorgeous. Wind can be beautiful. When I scrolled down to the portion of your post featuring the damage... my breath caught. I was so grateful that it was just your shed, and NOT your house. Oh Liza, that was some WIND.

Ouch. We've lost eight trees on our land from wind in the last year and a half. I respect the wind.

WOW! That first picture is gorgeous. But you're right; admiring what the wind does to the ocean from a safe distance is a lot different than experiencing up close and personal what the wind can do to your home and property. I'm glad none of those trees hit your house.

First let me say I am so glad to hear no one was injured in the wind storm, very scary especially with trees falling all around. we also recently went through a wind event and spent 50 hours with no electricity.
I also live by the ocean and I love the first picture, it is so beautiful!
I found your great blog when searching for over 40 bloggers. I don't really relate to the 20 & 30 year olds with young families...looking to connect with other bloggers who are, like me, over 40!
