Sticking a Big Toe Back in

I wanted to write about blueberry picking on an unheard-of first of July—how the geese honked on the nearby farm pond and about making eye contact with a quivering coyote before he disappeared behind a bush.  I was going to tell you the worry he caused me was worth it because in the end, there was a luscious blueberry crisp for dessert that night.

I was going to write about partaking in our occasional summer tradition .  How the following Sunday, we brewed coffee, bought a few bagels and loaded ourselves into our dingy.  Before 8:00 a.m., we sipped from cups at the end of the breakwater that protects our harbor, but the tide came up fast.  So we climbed back into the boat, anchored it off shore and  listened to the lap of the water while watching an egret pick its way through the waving fingers of marsh grass across the channel.

I thought about describing our sail on Saturday, and how a steady breeze (perfect for a reluctant sailor like me) carried us well beyond the lighthouse a mile out.  When it was time to turn around the wind shifted and carried us through the trail of sunlight sparkling across that late afternoon water and back into the harbor, no tacking required.

I thought about writing down all of these things and now I have.  Maybe that means I’m back.  In truth, I’m not really sure—

What have you enjoyed the most about your summer so far?

Haven't taken a vacation yet. I'll just reread this post and enjoy yours again from a distance.
Wonderful pictures BTW.

I am glad you wrote about it. It sounds idyllic, and just what summer should be.

We have yet to take a vacation but are planning stuff for August. That will be out fun month. Love that pic of a lighthouse. I'm a big lighthouse fan.

I hope it means you're back.

Also, it means I need to come visit you. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. You either live in the most magical place on earth, or you have an amazing ability to make it seem magical. Maybe it's both.

These details you "thought" about writing are so beautiful. You know how to describe a scene in such a way that I feel like I'm actually in it.

If I lived in such an idyllic place as you do, I don't think I would ever feel like I needed to "go on" a vacation. I would feel like I was vacationing all year round!

Getting info from you is like pulling a gopher from its hole. You never tell us anything. ;-)

So far, my best adventure was the first ever Mother/Daughter Get Together. My sister and I and our two daughters got away for four days to the shore of Lake Superior. Had a great time.

You don't have to go far for a vacation, do you?

Ah yes, you're back! And welcome back! But keep that relaxed spirit.

Lovely to see you again. As well as read your words and hear/smell the ocean breaking on the rocks, being parted by the bow of your boat.

I love to hear of your summer adventures and imagine enjoying them, too. I've been all about moving, but sometimes that's life.

Beautiful Liza, thankyou. Your post is a lovely antidote from the dreary soggy winter we're having down here. I can't quite remember what made us think that going camping mid winter was a good idea - but at least we weren't on a yacht! Sue

Lovely post!

Summer has been hot in a kind of horrible way, but the heat really makes you feel alive, in a toasty kind of way.

You're back. Oh heck yes you're back. You just took a boring, difficult day and turned it relaxing and soothing and vivifying.

Grazie.

Glad you wrote about it, glad you enjoyed it too.
I'm a reluctant sailor too! Can't see the point of it- if it's calm, then it's slow and boring but still work to be done, it it's rough, it's icky! Give me a motorboat any day.

Love the way you wrote about writing about your thoughts, and the image of the coyote peering will stick in my mind as I eat my bluberries [from a less exotic pick-trip to my supermarket]!

Ah, sounds wonderful. I love sailing. A novice but I do enjoy it.

So far, Summer has been about BBQs and enjoying the company of friends. ;-)
