Warming up While the Season Cools Down

As I write this, it is 63 degrees in my house.  The thermometer in the back yard reads 71.  The sun is too low in the sky to get over the trees and our home stays in a perpetual state of shade.  I am sorry to say, we are preparing for winter.

The boats have been pulled, we’ve begun yanking down the storm windows and the two cords of wood we ordered fill the cutout in the driveway.  Being frugal Yankees though, we can’t even consider turning on the heat yet.  It’s the time of year we wear our sweaters inside, taking them off when we leave the house, donning them again when we return.

Experience has taught me well.  The best way to get rid of the chill is to get out from under the trees and today, when I returned home to a cold house after the Monday a.m. volunteer stint, I chose not to stay.  Instead I grabbed the camera.

In the car, the sun heated the air while a cracked window delivered a sharp freshness I drew deep into my lungs.  The fleece jacket on the seat beside me remained untouched while a trip around town to capture some October images delivered its own, internal warmth.

It's often warmer outside our house than in but we have started using our log burner again - it's lovely!
Beautiful crisp photos - I can imagine filling my lungs with such fresh air.

These are beautiful images! Thank you! Here in London - the day is bright, the sky is blue, the sun is up but boy oh boy, it's COLD!
:-)

Take care

lovely and true that taking the camera on safari is the best medicine. Think I'll do it myself today.

Ha! It's been cold in my house too, and sweaters are everywhere. The only time I had to turn on the heat was when we were all sick. But it's back off now. I hope I won't have to turn it back on until November.

I really want a wood burner.

Great pics. Thanks.

Even though I live in Southern Callifornia, I'm in a drafty, old beach house with no central heat. We have to bundle up in winter, too, unless we turn on expensive space heaters. Sometimes the sun on the front stoop or a crisp walk is best. Ilove your pix.

And nice photos! Wish my wife would let me keep it that cold in the house. I wouldn't even need a sweater.

I feel a little 'soft'. I turn on the heat and keep it at 70, year-round. I guess that's why I'd better get moved to a warmer place. I could save a lot of money, especially since when I am in a sunny locale I feel comfortable with the AC set at 85!
Your crisp photos are so lovely. I do crave the fresh sharp air sometimes and will probably miss it when I leave the Northwest.

I am cold blooded, and curled on a sunny spot on a rock most winter days when the sun will break through. It's the only thing that can warm these bones.

I love reading about your changing seasons and preparations for winter. I like that you wear jumpers indoors and don't rely on heating until its really necessary.

Temperatures are all over the place where I live. I'm used to that kind of changing. :)

Lovely photos. Today was our first autumn-like day in San Antonio. Upper 40s last night and upper 70s this afternoon. Thanks for commenting on my blog today.

That pile of wood looks 0h so familiar! and so is the weather being all over the place! I'm always looking for an opportunity to wear a sweater, inside of out :)

Oh, yes there is a nip in the air. Will be sad saying goodbye to October.
